7 year old girl drowns in pond

Administration calls swimmers from nearby villages; provides green passage to the rescue teams

Chief Minister announces Rs.2 lakh ex gratia for the family of the deceased

Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, November 17:
In an extremely unfortunate incident, a seven-year-old girl, identified as, Harman Kaur, a resident of village Hassanpur in Kharar sub-division here lost her life after falling in village pond, informed Deputy Commissioner, Girish Dayalan.
As per the villagers, she was learning to ride bicycle and in the process, she lost control and fell in the pond at around 3:15 pm on Tuesday. A young girl from the village witnessed the tragedy while returning from college. She called out for help and the villagers reached the spot in 5 to 7 minutes. Police received the call around 3:35 pm following which the officers from local administration including Sub Divisional Magistrate Himanshu Jain rushed to the spot.
Immediate rescue operation was initiated. Swimmers from Morinda and other nearby villages were called. Also, with the help of villagers Motor pump was installed to drain the pond. In the meanwhile, NDRF team was also called by Administration as backup. Green passage was provided to facilitate quick movement of the rescue teams.
Around 5 pm, swimmers recovered the body from the pond and immediately rushed it to the civil hospital where it was declared dead.
Deputy Commissioner informed that Chief Minister Punjab has announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the family of the deceased.
After due procedure, the body will be handed over to family in the morning.
Harman was the daughter of Ravinder Singh, a soldier in Indian Army, posted near Baramula. Her mother is a home maker and had 3 children, two girls and a boy.
