Today, a raid was conducted by the officers of mining department in Gocher village and it was discovered that fresh 5000 cubic feet of gravel had been taken out. The crusher, used to dig the ground there, was also seized by the officers. “Following a tip-off, we conducted raid at the village and found that illegal mining was going on in Gocher village. Now we are trying to find out the illegal activities in the adjoining villages with the help of GPS. Soon, the owners, will be sent notices through the Tehsildar and hefty fines will be imposed on the violators,” said Gurpreet Pal Singh Sandhu, District mining officer. The fine for sand and gravel is Rs 60 per tonne whereas for ordinary earth is Rs 10 per tonne, said the officer. Pertinently, former Director General of Police (DGP) Paramdeep Singh Gill along with other 44 farmers for Saini Majra was booked by the Majri Block police on July 6 this year for allegedly allowing illegal mining on their land under Section 21 of the Mine and Minerals (Regulations and Development) Act.
