Mohali Police busts online betting gang, 2 held

14 mobile phones, laptops and 570 gm heroin recovered

Mohali Police yesterday nabbed two persons, involved in illegal betting of on-going IPL matches, from Homeland society in Sector 70 here. The police also recovered four laptops, 14 mobile phones, a phone landing machine and 570 grams of heroin worth Rs 2 crore 85 lakh from the possession of suspects.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Vipan Kumar, a resident of Patel Nagar in Hisar and Rakesh Manchanda alias Rinku, a resident of Faridabad. Two more suspects who are yet to be arrested by the police have been identified as Tarush Dhawan, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Kaithal and Malkit Singh alias Aman resident of Batala in Gurdaspur.
SP (City), Mohali, Harwinder Singh Virk informed today during a press conference the police had received a tip-off that online betting was taking place at the Homeland Society’s flat in Sector 70 here. As soon as the information was received, Rajiv Kumar, SHO, Mataur Police Station and DSP (City1) Gursher Singh Sandhu, conducted a raid at the flat and nabbed the suspects, who were betting on the IPL match, he said.
“The suspects were duping innocent people by offering them money and they were also involved in large scale drug smuggling,” said SP Virk while adding that “During the preliminary interrogation it was discovered that the suspects had been living in the Homeland Society for two months and had played bet in around 35 matches so far. They used to bet around Rs 4 to 5 lakh on a single match. The accused used to transfer the bet money to their accounts through Google Pay and Paytm. A search is on for arresting the absconding suspects and they will be nabbed soon.”
A case under Sections 420 of IPC, 13-3-67 of the Gambling Act and 21, 29-61-85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspects at the Mataur police station in this connection.
It is worth mentioning here that political leaders also keep coming and going in the Homeland Society and so far many senior political leaders have held their meetings and press conferences here.
