Kharar flyover construction: Massive protests over lack of access to historic town Daun and other villages

People of nearby villages will celebrate Black Diwali in protest of not giving way to their villages

The flyover and elevated road being constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) from Mohali to Khanpur T-point has caused a great deal of controversy for dozens of other villages, including the historic town of Daun. The district and police administration have also come down on the alleged bullying following the false allegations of political parties. Satnam Singh Daun, a resident of the village and president of Punjab Against Corruption, said that the people of the area had recently staged a dharna on the National Highway but after the personal intervention of Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, the district administration had asked the protesters to calloff the protest there after promising to open it. But now the administration is threatening to send police personnel to the protesters’ homes and send them to jail on false pretenses, and the administration has resumed work on the flyover, he said.
Satnam said that in protest, the entry of political leaders in village Daun was banned. In this regard, the villagers have put up flex boards in the streets saying, “If you doesn’t leave the corridor for Daun Gurdwara Sahib, don’t come here to ask for votes.” Such boards have been hung in other villages and on the roads. A board has also been hung on the national highway tied with electric wires. He said that the people of the affected villages have decided to celebrate Black Diwali and videos of political leaders using false pretenses would be uploaded on social media.
