Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, October 23:
Sumedh Singh Saini, a well-known former DGP of Punjab, who is facing serious charges of murder and abduction of Balwant Singh Multani, a junior engineer (JE) of CITCO, three decades ago, has been asked to join the probe.
Police have again issued the summon against him signed by SHO of Mataur police station. Saini has been asked to join the Special Investigation Team (SIT) at Mataur police station on October 26 at 11 am. Sources said that for the first time ever, the police had handed over the summon to Saini himself. According to information received, Saini was present when the police reached his house and the police party handed over the summon to him.
It is learned that on September 15, the apex court granted interim bail to the former DGP and asked him to join the probe. Earlier also Mohali police had summoned him and questioned him. However, Saini had once refrained from joining the probe due to pain in his leg.
After recording the statements of eyewitnesses and two former UT police inspectors Jagir Singh and Kuldeep Singh Sandhu, the police had on August 21 added the charge of murder against Saini in the case. Earlier, a case was registered against him under Section 364 and other sections of the IPC at the Mataur police station.
The former DGP has knocked on the door of the apex court seeking dismissal of the criminal case registered against him and fixed bail and both the cases are scheduled to be heard on October 27. Apart from this, a petition of the government to withdraw the arrest warrant issued by the Mohali court against Saini and cancel the bail granted to him is also under consideration. The case is also set to be heard on October 27. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has surrounded Saini and named him in the Behbal Kalan and Faridkot cases for disrespecting Guru Granth Sahib and the government is looking for any opportunity to put shackles on the feet of the former DGP. Prosecutors have also claimed in court that the government has strong evidence against the former DGP for abducting Multani and killing him in police custody following which Saini’s problems are constantly increasing.
