Agriculture laws: SC issues notices to Central, Punjab and Haryana Govt

Harshabab Sidhu
Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, December 16:
Already 20 days have been passed since the massive farmers’ agitation against the three controversial agricultural laws has been started at the Delhi borders. The Delhi-Noida border was once again blocked on Wednesday. Farmers’ organizations have already rejected the amendments in a written reply to the government. The matter is being heard in the Supreme Court. On the issue, the court said it was a national issue and needed to be resolved by consensus.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard a petition seeking removal of farmers who had protested on the Delhi border. The court has issued notices to the Central Government and the Punjab and Haryana state governments in this regard and asked them to file their respective cases by Thursday. The court has also suggested the formation of a joint committee of all parties to resolve the issue. The court said it would hear the farmers’ side and asked the government why no agreement had been reached so far. The court said such issues should be settled as soon as possible by mutual consent.
The next hearing in the case will be on Thursday.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice asked the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta who had stopped the farmers from coming to Delhi. In the reply, Mehta said the farmers were stopped by the Delhi Police and the government was talking to the farmers but so far the issue could not be resolved.
Mehta said that the government was talking to the farmers. BKU (Bharati Kisan Union) and other organizations of the farmers have staged a sit-in dharna at Delhi’s borders. But other disturbing elements have also joined the dharna, he said before the court.
Tushar Mehta said the government would not do anything against the farmers. The Chief Justice has sought the names of the farmers and their leaders so that they can be made a party in the case to discuss the matter.
It is to be noted that the farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan in huge numbers have been on strike since November 26 on the borders of Delhi against the controversial three new agriculture laws.
