Country’s First 3-D Smart Traffic Signal Start Operating in Mohali

Pilot Project by Traffic Police Punjab under Mission Tandrust Punjab

Nabaz-e-Punjab Bureau, 2 Aug:

Punjab Police Traffic Wing under the supervision of ADGP (Traffic) Mr Sharad Satya
Chauhan, IPS with the team consisting start-up venture by Mr Gaurav of Anukai Solutions,
Mr Navdeep Asija, Traffic Advisor Punjab, Mr Arbab Ahmad, Project Manager, Punjab Vision
Zero, Ms.Ashwini SP City-1 Mohali, and Mr Charanjit Singh, Road Safety Engineer SAS
Nagar worked to developed the real-time solution and converted the traditional simple light
into fully actuated. This traffic will function as per the availability of traffic on each side of the road. The first pilot project is selected for trial run and will be duplicated in other places soon “Traditional methods of traffic police for controlling and regulating traffic are very much labour-intensive and 2-dimensional, employing the 3-D technique to make traffic signal fully actuated and on a real-time basis is first of its kind in the country and I congratulate the entire team for this successful mission. This will be a major leapfrog towards better and economical traffic management system, said Dr.Sharad Satya Chauhan, ADGP Traffic and who has been instrumental in spearheading the task of bringing research and development as an integral part in the Policing. Yesterday only RajyaSabha has passed amendments which mandate state governments to ensure electronic monitoring and enforcement of road safety on National Highways, State
Highways, and urban roads as per guidelines framed by the central government and this is a
proactive approach of the Punjab State in advance Memorandum of Understanding to conduct research and development in the area of IT and
Computation for Traffic Police with the start-up Anukai Solutions of Chitkara University was
signed in the month of September 2018 and immediately after that team was assigned to
this mammoth task. The actuated signals incurs high initial and on-going maintenance costs than fixed time
signals and vary from 70 Lakh to1 Crore. This simple mechanism will just cost 1% to the
fixed signal cost and it will start working as a fully actuated signal. “Not only huge saving in
cost, but this will also reduce the tendency to jump traffic light, reduce travel time and
modeling time spent at a traffic signal. Each second saved at Traffic Signal in saving in litters
of fuel and emissions” said Mr.Kahan Singh Pannu, Mission Director Tandrust Punjab.
These signals are calibrated on the movement of traffic but keeping 15 second in each
direction as a minimum time, essentially required for the safe crossing of pedestrians.
All around 450 traffic signals operational across the state of Punjab can be converted into 3D
fully actuated traffic signals, after the successful completion of Pilot project in Mohali on a
fully commercial scale. This is a base technology and further extensions like synchronisation
of traffic lights, creation of green corridor and managing the traffic lights of entire Punjab,
while sitting at one place is also possible. On the demonstration day, IG Rupnagar Range Ms Neeraja, IPS, SSP Mohali Mr
KuldipChahal, Ms Ashwinini, IPS, SP City-1, Mohali, Mr Ashok Sharma, Xen, Punjab
Pollution Control Board and the other project implimentation team with the dignitries from
Punjab Police and Municipal Corporation were present.
