Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, Janaury 15:
As the Mohali Municipal Corporation elections are approaching, the political atmosphere in the city has begun to burn. Mohali residents have also started targeting the rulers and officials for allocating wrong ward boundary and removing the votes of the opposition.
Residents of Kumbhra village in Sector 68 staged a protest outside the DC’s office today and chanted slogans against the authorities for incorrect ward boundary, fraudulent voting and setting up of polling booths away from the village and demolition of the old ward. The shocking news is that the names of the deceased are listed in Kumbhra’s voter list but names of few geniune voters are not seen anywhere. So now even the dead will rise from the grave and come to vote?
Led by social activist Balwinder Singh Kumbhra, a large number of villagers went to the Deputy Commissioner today to lodge a complaint in this regard but he asked them to file an application with the ADC. When the villagers reached the ADC, he asked them to go to another official, citing government engagements. As a result, the angry villagers protested outside the DC’s office and chanted slogans against the authorities.
Balwinder Singh Kumbhra said it was surprising that the district administration officials did not even have time to listen to the victims. “Where do people go to get justice in such a situation?,” he said. He alleged that Kumbhra had been wrongly warded off and the old wards had been completely redesigned in the cycle of vote removals. He said that Kumbhra’s voter list has 50 to 60 names of people who had passed away 10 to 15 years ago. While the votes of the alive are not being formed yet. He asked the administration whether the dead would now come to vote from the grave. Villagers said that Kumbhra polling booth has been set up at the Army Institute of Law, which is quite away from the population for voting while the booth could be set up at a government school or any other common place.
Seeing the villagers protesting, in the presence of SSP Satinder Singh, who was later passing by, ADC Ashika Jain and ADC Rajiv Gupta stood in the vehicle parking lot and listened to the protesters and the Naib Tehsildar obtained the memorandum from the victims. The authorities assured the complainants of due process. The villagers then returned to their homes.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion are Nambardar Onkar Singh, Dilbag Singh, Manjit Singh, Labh Singh, Jagdish Singh, Sucha Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Surinder Singh, Harbans Singh, Kulwinder Kaur, Karamjit Kaur, Jujhar Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Harjinder Singh and Hardeep Singh.
