Addressing the gathering, Her excellency, Ms Mia congratulated the organization, Girls Rise for Mohali for taking a lead and honoring women from various field for their exemplary achievement”. She further said, “There is no dearth of talent among females. Even the in western societies women are often discriminated against their male counterparts, be it professional from or domestic. There is a need to change the mindset of the society so that women can come up and achieve what they dream of.” J S Bedi, Chairperson Gian Jyoti Group lamented on the fact that today even educated parents take their daughters to be a responsibility and burden. He said, “Parents should invest in their daughter’s education rather than on marriage. When girls are educated, their countries become stronger and more prosperous. A daughter is an asset to family and is capable of achieving anything and everything.” Sumit Roy, Regional Manager, State Bank of India, Mohali said that we need to rejoice the birth of a daughter as we do on the birth of a son. Women have forever suffered at the hands of society’s rules and regulations. Through this event we wish to spread awareness about the inequalities face by the girl child among the people. It is every individual’s duty to ensure that women get equal opportunities and exposure”. Opinder Preet Kaur, Founder of Girls Rise for Mohali, who is also a municipal councilor from Mohali advising women in audience to stand up for themselves and each other said, “Even in the 21st century, we come across discrimination on basis of gender, only the magnitude and the form has changed overtime. There are field where women are considered a misfit. But the truth is there is no barriers a woman cannot conquer.” She called upon all women to embrace the strength within themselves and realize their full potential. On this occasion Harleen Deol emerging star of Indian Women Cricket Team, Anita Swadesh and Satwinder Kaur who Punjabi movie and theatre artist, Dr Sunaina Bansal of Cyclegiri fame, Sahiba J Singh – a fitness expert, Gurnoor Kaur who won under 10 years Gymnastic Championship, Gangandeep Kaur- Director Future Hi Tech, Ananya Kamboj – Global Citizen and author of My Journey from Mohali to St Peterburg, community workers Dr Poonam Sharma and Jagdeep Kaur were honoured for their valuable contribution to their respective fields and bringing pride and glory to not just their family but to the entire nation. The National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on January 24. It was started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008, with the purpose to spread awareness among people about all the inequalities girls face in the Indian society.
