Kartarpur corridor should be opened now: Khaira

Harshabab Sidhu
Nabaz-e-Punjab Bureau, Mohali, August 11:
Former Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sukhpal Singh Khaira has written a letter to the Prime Minister seeking reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor which was closed due to the pandemic. He also sought personal intervention from the Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh regarding this important issue. Khaira appealed to the former minister Navjot Singh Sidhu to take appropriate steps to reopen the corridor.
Talking to reporters here today, Sukhpal Singh Khaira said that the corridor of Sri Kartarpur Sahib was temporarily closed on March 16 by the governments of both the countries. On the occasion of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s death anniversary, on June 29, Pakistan reopened the Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor to the pilgrims but the corridor is still closed on the Punjab side. He said now the social activities were going on as usual and places like Gurdwaras, Temples, Mosques, Churches and Dharamsalas were open to the public. Recently, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Therefore the corridor should also be opened now, Khaira added.
Targetting the government on the issue of spurious liquor, Khaira said the fake liquor business was going on in the border villages of the state under the nose of the government. He alleged the government has taken action against a few excise department and police personnel but the real culprits are roaming around fearlessly.
Khaira added the visit of the Chief Minister was merely to influence the investigation. He also demanded a compensation of ₹ 25 lakh per person to the family members of the deceased along with a government job.
