Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, September 27:
Mohali Police today issued second notice to former DGP Sumedh Saini, who is facing serious charges of mysterious disappearance after abducting Mohali resident and CITCO Junior Engineer (JE) Balwant Singh Multani three decades ago, to join the probe. A notice issued to Saini today signed by SHO (Station House Officer) of Mataur police station to join the investigation of Special Investigation Team (SIT) at the police station tomorrow. The police chief himself has posted a notice at the main gate outside Saini’s residence. A similar notice has been posted outside the former DGP’s residence in Delhi. A copy of the notice has also been sent to Saini’s lawyers on their WhatsApp numbers.
Earlier on September 21, the police had sent a similar notice to Saini asking him to appear before the SIT on September 23 but he did not reach the police station that day but after two days he suddenly arrived at the district police headquarters and asked the SIT chief to be involved in the investigation but the investigating officer did not went beyond the law and refused to do so.
Sources said that after this Saini also tried to meet the SSP but he did not meet Saini. However, it could not be confirmed whether the SSP was present in the office that day or whether Saini had contacted him.
It is learned that despite getting temporary bail from the Supreme Court on September 15, the former DGP has not yet joined the police investigation. However, the apex court had stayed Saini’s arrest and asked him to co-operate in the police investigation. After recording the statements of eyewitnesses and two former UT police inspectors Jagir Singh and Kuldeep Singh Sandhu, who were witnesses, the police had on August 21 extended the charge of murder against Saini.
On September 15, Supreme Court granted relief to the former DGP, stayed his arrest and directed Saini to co-operate in the police investigation. The state government was also asked to file its reply within three weeks. The next hearing in the Supreme Court will be on October 27.
