Meanwhile, a special team of Mohali police has questioned the wife and son of the former DGP to know about his whereabouts. A member of the SIT (Special Investigation Team) said that a team of Mohali police had gone to Delhi in search of Saini and questioned Saini’s family. The family said that he (Saini) has not been in touch with them for the last several days. SIT of the Punjab Police also raided former Punjab DGP Sumedh Saini’s Sector 20, Chandigarh residence today and carried out search of the premises. Saini is on the run after Punjab and Haryana High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in the Balwant Singh Multani disappearance case. Saini has moved the Supreme Court against the decision of the high court. Saini has now approached the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail, which was recently being rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Saini, through his lawyers, has filed an application in the Supreme Court challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s judgement. It may be recalled here that a single bench headed by High Court Judge Fatehdeep Singh had recently rejected the anticipatory bail application of the former DGP in a major blow. Earlier, the district Mohali court had rejected the anticipatory bail plea of accused former DGP. Now if Saini does not get any relief even from the Supreme Court, he will have no choice but to surrender to the police or the Mohali court. On the other hand, Special Public Prosecutor Sartej Singh Narula said the state has not received any notice from Saini seeking relief from the Supreme Court. However, he said if Saini went to the Supreme Court instead of surrendering to the police or the court, the Punjab government would strictly oppose the bail plea of the former DGP and tell the court that there were very serious allegations against Saini. Therefore, bail should not be granted to the accused under any circumstances. Narula said that Saini has to be taken into custody and interrogated. Because after the case was registered, the accused did not co-operate with the police in the investigation. He said the government had strong evidence that the youth had died in police custody. Efforts are on by Mohali police to arrest Saini, but to no avail.
