PUNJAB COMMENCES SPECIAL SCREENING PROGRAM TO DIAGNOSE BREAST & CERVIX CANCER

IN WOMEN, BREAST AND CERVIX CANCER IS MOST COMMON CANCER – BRAHM MOHINDRA

ONLY AWARENESS AND CAUTIONS CAN PREVENT CANCER

The Punjab Government has commenced a massive campaign, exclusively to diagnose breast, cervix, and mouth cancer. This special campaign is being implemented in 22 districts and 192 Sub Divisional Hospitals and Community Health Centres in State.
Disclosing this here today, Health and Family Welfare Minister Punjab, Mr. Brahm Mohindra said that state government has initiated ‘Free Annual Preventive Health Checkup programme’ to diagnose most common diseases likewise cancer, hypertension and diabetes. He said that congress Government has taken the cognizance that there is urgent need to launch a massive cancer awareness campaign in order to make people conscious about these diseases. He said that the research has established that if detected at the first stage cancer could be cured. In fact, only right information at right time will save the patients who are unaware about the symptoms of cancer. There is long list of celebrities and others who fought back this deadly disease and leading a normal life thereafter.
He said that keeping in view, Health Department has imparted special training to MOs (Medical Officers), staff nurses and ANMs ( Auxiliary Nurse mid wife) to conduct tests under the screening campaign especially in rural areas of the state. Since 2886 ANMs and 155 nursing sisters have been trained for this ambitious programme.
Health Minister said that in women, breast and cervix cancer is the most common cancer and under this screening programme 20487 females screened under cervix cancer test out of 460 detected suspected and 384 females have been referred for further investigation. 29636 females screened under breast cancer out of 683 females detected with suspected cancer and 579 referred for further investigation. Similarly under mouth cancer screening 21832 females and 12746 males screened out of 236 females and 330 males detected with suspected cancer and 176 females and 294 males referred for further investigation.
Mr. Mohindra said that it is pertinent to mention that we still necessitate more and more screening and awareness programme to cover up total population of the state and we all know early detection of cancer is a single life line. He said that “I don’t know any specific reason why the previous Governments had not taken up any serious action to initiate screening and awareness programme even though cancer has extremely impacted the all districts of State”.
Health Minster further said that according to experts’ surveys and researches physically inactiveness, less workout, pollution, pesticides, consuming tobacco and alcohol, adulterated food and contaminated water are the major causes of cancer.
He also said that the cancer patients belonging to the BPL families in Punjab have been given the financial assistance upto Rs. 1.50 Lakh for cancer treatment Under Mukh Mantri Cancer Rahat Kosh. He said that state government has chalked out a plan to standardize and strengthen the empanelled hospitals in which cancer treatment is being provided to the patients.
