SAD leader and a family booked in dowry case

Sohana police have registered a case of dowry on the complaint of a woman, against her in-laws family members, including her husband. The police have booked them on charges of harassing and beating the woman for dowry. In this case the police also booked Avtar Singh, a current Block Samiti member of Shiromani Akali Dal of village Mauli Baidwan under the sections of the Arms Act for allegedly threatening the victim with his pistol.
The victim Kulwinder Kaur, a resident of village Maulli Baidwan, in her complaint to the police said that she was married to Gurmeet Singh in 2011 and her family had given her dowry according to their status, but the in-laws started demanding more dowry from her after her marriage and she was often beaten.
Sohana police have registered a case against the victim’s husband Gurmeet Singh, mother-in-law Baljinder Kaur, Ajaib Singh, father-in-law Labh Singh, Kamaljit Singh under Sections 323, 341, 506, 354, 498A, 148, 149 of the IPC while the former Sarpanch of the village and current Block Samiti member Avtar Singh has been booked in the case under the relevant Sections of the Arms Act.
On the other hand, Akali leader Avtar Singh said that the police had registered a case against him under the Arms Act at the behest of a Congress leader of the area. According to Avtar Singh, his pistol and .315 rifle have been stored in the same police station for the last several months. He said that only after his one sided victory in the Block Samiti elections, the Mohali police was using the victims to frame him in a fake trial. He said that he has lodged a written complaint with the district police chief seeking justice in this matter and if the case against him was not dismissed, he would knock on the door of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The investigating officer, ASI Sanjay Kumar said that the case has been registered by the police on the basis of the victim’s statements and if Avtar Singh has any proof of his innocence, he can present his case to the police and the police will take action based on the evidence. “We have been conducting raids at the address of the suspects but they all are at large. We will arrest them soon,” said the ASI.
