Multani case: SC adjourns Saini’s bail plea hearing to Oct 14

Harshabab Sidhu
Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, October 9:
The hearing on the anticipatory bail plea of former DGP Sumedh Saini in the case of alleged abduction and murder of Junior Engineer Balwant Singh Multani in 1991 will take place on October 14 in the Supreme Court. The apex court has today adjourned the matter headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan after advocate Misha Rohatgi sought an adjournment in the case due to his bad throat and other health problems.
Earlier, the court had granted three weeks of interim bail to the accused DGP in this case. The court also had asked Saini to fully co-operate in the police probe.
The order (dated September 7) of denial of anticipatory bail plea in Punjab and Haryana High court was also challenged by Saini.
Saini’s counsel had argued before the court that his client was being falsely implicated in the case by the state government as he has filed two chargesheets on the name of Captian Amarinder Singh.
On May 6 this year, a case was registered at the Mataur police station against Saini along with six other cops for allegedly kidnapping Balwant Singh Multani in 1991. Later on, the murder charge was also added in the case in August.
Multani, who remained Junior Engineer of Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporation (CITCO) was apprehended by the police after a terrorist attack on Saini, who was then UT SSP. Three policemen were killed while Saini was injured in this attack.
Balwant Singh Multani’s father Darshan Singh Multani filed a petition before Punjab and Haryana High Court stating that his son and Bhullar have been eliminated by police officials.
