Betting racket: Suspects sent to judicial custody, absconding suspects yet to be arrested

Nabaz-e-Punjab, Mohali, October 15:
The two suspects arrested by the Mohali police involved in betting and drug rackets from Homeland Society in Sector 70 here, were sent to judicial custody in Sangrur jail by the Mohali court today. The suspects, Vipan Kumar and Rakesh Manchanda alias Rinku were indulging in betting on the ongoing IPL matches along with their accomplices, Tarush Dhawan and Malkit Singh, who are stil at large.
DSP (City 1) Gursher Singh Sandhu said, “The arrested suspects were sent to judicial custody today. Teams have been searching the possible hideouts of the absconding suspects and we are hoping to nab them soon.”
DSP also said that the bank accounts of the suspects, through which they used to done the transactions, are frozen. “We got all the details of their bank accounts. Soon, the financial investigation will be done by involving the banking institutions,” said DSP Gursher Singh Sandhu.
Inspector Rajiv Kumar, Station House Officer of Mataur police station said, “During the interrogation of the suspects, it came to forw that they used to purchase the drug from Delhi and sell it to the customers in Tricity at higher prices.”
The police had recovered four laptops, 14 mobile phones, a phone landing machine and 570 grams of heroin worth Rs2.85 crore from their possession on October 10. In addition to this, four diaries containing records of betting, were also recovered by the police during the raid.
A case under Sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Sections 13, 3 and 67 of the Gambling Act and Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the suspects at the Mataur police station.
